A recent Cory Doctorow post on BoingBoing hits straight on mark. He quotes a CD/DVD pirate telling how he went out of business because his clients started torrenting the same movies/CDs he was selling them. So maybe P2P isn’t the best thing that happened to the recording industry or hollywood (arguable still) in general, but it sure helps them against the the “heavy duty” pirates - Those who actually profit from stolen copyright material as apposed to the P2P users who only DL for their own consumption.

I never sold or bought a pirated copy of CD/DVD personally so I don’t fit in this equation. Yet, I’m glad to hear that P2P is influencing this industry for the better on both fronts - pushing the RIAA and Hollywood into a better non-DRM digital distribution model and taking the real pirates out of business.
